The capital of Russia Moscow, considered to be a close neighbor by Russian standards (700 km!), is only one hour flight away. There are also convenient train connections. One may choose between 8-hour overnight sleeping train or fast day trains - 3 hrs 45 min.
The most feasible pattern is a weekend starting in Moscow avoiding weekday traffic and high hotel rates and then continuation to St. Petersburg for 3 or 4 nights.
